Chat in a Hat: Yoke Lore
If you could be an animal for a day what would you be?
This really depends if I’m going to go for speed, strength, or size. I think I’d have to go like Dolphin. I’m between that a Peregrin falcon it would be great to be the fastest thing alive and experience flight but it would be even more jarring and interesting to be in a new universe like the ocean. it’s so mysterious and unchartered so there’s so much to learn. I’d like to figure some of that out.
What’s your favorite city you’ve toured to?
I really really love Toronto. Every time I go there it gets better and better. Both times I’ve played there there have been people that have never heard of me cause they heard live music was happening. In Canada they’re just super appreciative. I think it’s also just an awesome city with a lot of interesting history.
What is the first record you ever bought?
Dookie. It just blew my mind. I was at my sister’s friend’s house. She had an older sister that I thought was beautiful and she was listening to Green Day and I thought it was the most bad ass thing thing I ever heard. The next day I begged my mom for money to buy the record. It changed my life. It changed how I felt about music. I later started learning Green Day songs with my friends. It’s the way I saw myself in music.
What is your favorite 90’s show and/or album?
The Secret World of Alex Mack. She was like the first love of my life. I was like 10.
What’s your favorite song and/or album right now?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Labi Siffre. He was making a lot of music in the 70s and he made a lot of famous samples. The beat from “My Name Is” by Eminem is from one of his songs. He’s better than James Taylor, funkier than Stevie Wonder, his lyrics are on par with Leonard Cohan. I think he was panned in Britain cause he is black and gay.
What is your favorite food on the road?
Soup. I’m not a big soup guy, but I drink a lot of bone broth when I’m on the road. I really really love bone soup.
If you could have any superpower what would you want?
I think time travel. If I could go back and have some conversations with people throughout history it would make my life a lot better.
Coolest venue you’ve ever played:
There’s this venue in Bristol called Thekla. It’s on a boat, they basically cleared our the whole middle of the hull and made it a venue. You’re like half submerged.
If you could invent one Olympic sport what would it be?
Pogo Sticking. It’s not done enough.
What would your wild west outlaw gang name be?
Good Boy Galvin
What’s your favorite thing about Philly?
The people. The city is fine, but the people here are so dope. The people here are so real. Everyone in New York is so fake.
Worst job you’ve had:
Pizza chef. I was a pizza chef for about three months after I got out of college. It was awesome for the first week cause I learned how to make dough and spin it and everything, but then after that I realized that was it. You just do that every day all day.
Favorite scary movie:
Probably Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The soundtrack is so blood curdling, it’s all these glass bottles clinking and slide guitars. It’s classic scary, none of this new gore shit.
You’re granted a once in a lifetime chance to travel into space. You’re allowed to bring on person and one item. Who/What would they be?
I’d probably bring my dad because his mind is just blown by everything.
What is your recording and writing process like?
My process is very situational. It depends where I am, who I’m with, what I’m doing. It just shifts and changes. Sometimes I write melodies first, sometimes I write drum parts first. Just depending what it is and where I am. Recording I like to go hard. I need to try and take breaks for like showers and stuff. I really like an immersive experience with that stuff. I don’t really like to go anywhere.
